Paul Horvath, BA LLB LLM

Paul has practised law for 19 years and has completed his Masters degree in Law, with an emphasis in sports law. He has written papers on a range of sporting issues including: Best Practise Governance in Sporting Leagues (Winner ANZSLA Paul Trisley Award 2007), collective agreements, restraint of trade, disciplinary tribunal systems (Runner up, ANZSLA Paul Trisley award, 2005) and the WADA Code and doping in sport (paper published in the Monash University Law Review in August, 2007).

Paul is solicitor for the Richmond Football Club on AFL Tribunal matters. He was Solicitor to Athletes and Officials at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games (pro bono). He was Solicitor to Athletes and Officials at the 2007 World Swimming Championships (Melbourne). He was National Co-ordinator of the AFL Players’ Association 24 Hour Legal Advice Service (2006-2008). Four years as Tribunal member of the Western Region Football League (2003-2006); Tribunal Member Football Federation Victoria(FFV) (2006-2008) and appointed to FFV Appeals Board 2009.

Paul was appointed in October 2009 by the AFL Players Association to the Player Agent Arbitration Panel. In the same month the Australian Olympic Committee appointed Paul to the panel of the National Federal Appeal Tribunal Chair for the Winter Olympics 2010. In December 2009 the Australian Cricketer's Association apointed Paul as an Independent Expert for determining injury claims.

Paul Horvath won the 2007 Paul Trisley Award presented by the Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Association for the year's best academic paper on sports law. read more...
