LLM student wins prestigious Sports Law prize

Congratulations to Paul Horvath, one of our LLM students specialising in sports law, for winning the Paul Trisley Award for the year’s best academic paper on a sports law topic.

Paul’s paper, League Structure, Economics and Best Governance Practice in Metropolitan Australian Football Leagues was a modified version of a paper he wrote for the Melbourne Law Masters subject Sports Law: Entities and Governance originally submitted in early 2007.

The prestigious annual award was established in 1995 by the Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Association and presented to Paul at the Association’s annual conference dinner in Queensland in November 2007.

His paper will be published in the 2008 edition of the Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Journal, a refereed publication.

Very good and thorough lawyer. Helped me a lot going through sponsorship contracts and fixing up clauses. Continued to help me through followup emails after our meeting and had very reasonable fees. Highly recommend!

We are very grateful to Paul Horvath and Sports Lawyer, we had what we felt was a case that really needed someone that had great experience in the field of sports and understanding laws and bylaws and the way tribunals work we could not use just a standard lawyer we are so glad we found Paul & his firm they gave us great advice worked tirelessly for our case were always prompt with communicating. Paul gave us confidence that we could have the issue dealt with in a professional and timely manner. I don’t know much about fees to compare to others but you get what you pay for I certainly feel the fees were reasonable for the work done and the outcome was favorable so again it was great work by Paul in understanding the case & circumstances. We could not recommend Paul and the firm more highly as our experience was nothing but positive.

To Paul, Emily, Megan

I would like to give you a very big thank you for all the work that you all done over the past week. Your extensive submissions and attention to detail was outstanding.

You took on a case that was not a financial gain to yourself but a big emotional one to me. I know that you say you were just doing your job, however I disagree, you definitely went above and beyond what I imagined you to go. You knew how much it meant to me to have my name cleared and you did not stop until that was done.

Paul your defence on the night was amazing, you were precise and vigilant in having my case dismissed. Even though you would have made a loss on you time and effort on the case, you still continued to push until you got what you wanted.

I will never stop singing your praises at the club and the club will to the same.

Thanks again

Regarding his successful appeal against a red card offence (Soccer) that resulted in a 12 match suspension.  The client was found not guilty of the offence and all charges were dismissed.

clients_r2_c24Thanks again for your work on tonight’s case.

It’s obviously very important for Brett Deledio and the club that he was cleared of intending to strike Matthew Stokes and be available to play… To have such professional representation with less than 24 hours’ notice is appreciated by Brett, the club and perhaps most importantly its members. Thanks again.

Sochi Olympic Skier Emily Bamford Re Her Successful Selection Appeal Hearing

clients_r4_c9Dear Paul,

On behalf of Athletics Australia I would like to thank you for your efforts in chairing our Selection Appeals Tribunal as part of the 2012 Olympic Nomination process. The hearings were conducted in a timely, fair and professional manner. The ability to quickly understand aspects and the finer details associated with the nomination criteria and process ensured that the hearings ran smoothly and that a resolution could be achieved on each occasion. We would recommend your services to other national sporting organisations.

Kind regards,
Dion Russell – Chairman of Selectors
Dallas O’Brien – Chief Executive Officer
Athletics Australia

clients_r22_c10I engaged the services of SportsLawyer to represent an athlete I sponsor, David Sera. David is a ten time national go-kart champion and has won over 35 State titles, and competes internationally on a regular basis since 2007.

Paul and his team at SportsLawyer prepared the appeal and disciplinary case for David with great attention to detail, and ran the case at the State and National tribunal for us, and also won the case before the Australian Motor Sport Appeal Court. The win meant the reinstatement to David of his national championship in 2007.

I would recommend Paul and his team at SportsLawyer on any sports related matter. I found Paul to be helpful and explained clearly and simply the case at all stages to us.

clients_r22_c10The team at SportsLawyer went to huge lengths to understand the fine details of my case at hand. After a lot of research on the topic, we won the case hands down! Paul and Penny were excellent communicators, and kept us updated with all the latest outcomes.

8 time Australian National Go Kart Champion.

Gymnastics-VictoriaThe presentation, “Good Governance and Risk Management” by Sports Lawyer (Paul Horvath) provided the Gymnastics Victoria Board with a great overview of the governance areas to be considered. It also assisted in thinking through the linkages between our strategic, risk management, operational plans and day to day business requirements. An extremely worthwhile exercise.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Gymnastics Victoria Board.

clients_r24_c12“I am absolutely thrilled that I am able to continue to box. The resolution of my case comes as a huge relief. It is my dream to represent Australia at the next Olympics in London and I am now more determined than ever to make it. The past six months have been a difficult time for me while my boxing career has been in limbo and I want to thank my family, friends and supporters who have all stood by me during this time. I also want to thank my lawyers, barrister Paul Hayes and solicitors Paul Horvath and Penny Lording who have acted on my behalf and helped ensure my future as a boxer.”

Dear Paul,
Everything is fine. Kateryna studies and practices in US now and so I do my business. I appreciate your work and support last year in Melbourne. Under the circumstances of limited time and mass media pressure your team and you could prepare and use qualified defense and professionally prepared all documents for the statement in Melbourne court and FINA disciplinary committee.
FINA was not prepared to such high level defense. And it forced them to make a decision opposite to their first one. The value of the three days work was so huge that only some FINA disciplinary committee participants interests in this case did not give us the opportunity to withdraw charges in that day. But correct and high level professional work of preparation appeal documents
and right defense in CSA, Lausanne Switzerland in September 2007 led us to satisfactory CAS decision.
I’d like to thank you again and wish good luck in your future work.
Best regards.
